This section presents the quarterly averages (trimester) for trading volume, market capitalization and trading price for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Trading Volume & Market Capitalization
For example, the average trading volume of Bitcoin during the first trimester of 2019 equated to nearly US$ 7.4 bn per day. This figure came to over US$ 9.3 bn during the same time frame in 2018. The corresponding downward retracement of trading volume was 20.9 percent.
For the first trimester of 2019, the average market capitalization equated to nearly US$ 67 bn. This figure came to over US$ 178 bn during the same period in 2018. The corresponding downward retracement of market capitalization was 62.6 percent.
Trading Price
The average trading price during the first trimester of 2019 was over US$ 3,800. In the same period of 2018, this figure came to just above eleven k. The corresponding price drop down equated to 65.2 percent.
The all-time high of Bitcoin in 2017
The price of the Bitcoin currency reached a high in December 2017 at just above twenty thousand US dollars. The equivalent market capitalization of the coin reached nearly US$ 321 billion. Bitcoin was an outlier here.
Bitcoins all-time high compared to Bitcoin and the most renowned companies worldwide
Apple, one of the most valuable brands in the world, stood at US$ 899 billion, while Volkswagen AG, the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer as of 2018, stood at US$ 100 billion at the time.

March 2019: an interesting date following the big cryptocurrency crash
On 1 March 2019, the price of Bitcoin stood at just above US$ 3,900 with a market capitalization of nearly US$ 68 billion. A decline down to approximately 19.5 percent in comparison with the highest trading price stated above.
Around that time, Ethereum dropped to about 9.7 percent of its all-time-high trading price.
