The user known as bytemaster launched Steem on 9 May 2016 via bitcointalk.org. coinmarketcap.com subsequently launched the collection of real-time trading data in May 2016.

Bitcoin dropped down to approximately 19.5 and Ethereum to about 9.7 percent of their all-time-high trading prices around that time.
